Overview
Take the graphics from Fantasy Zone and the gameplay from Space Harrier, mix them together and you get Space Fantasy Zone. This unreleased game has the basis of its gameplay in Space Harrier, but with some differences - you have an energy meter instead of one-hit-kills and you can upgrade your weaponry between levels in a shop.

Comment
This game was due out for absolutely ages and as far as anyone knows it was all ready to go, but never released (some say due to legal difficulties with Sega, others due to quality concerns). So have we been missing out on a gem all this time? Well, first impressions are not brilliant. Whereas you would expect it to surpass the HuCard of Space Harrier in both gameplay and graphics, it pretty much fails to impress. Sure, the graphics are pretty, but the scaling is no better (possibly worse) and there are rarely more than four background objects on screen at any one time, making it feel sparse. It’s harder to shoot things than in Space Harrier, and far easier to get hit as it’s often difficult to tell what is where - it's a fine line between success and failure with into-the-screen shooters, but Space Fantasy Zone is ultimately a disappointing and unsatisfying game, even for lovers of either of the originals and only gets by as a curiosity for collectors. The only plus side is that the arranged music is great.
