Overview
Sticking very closely to the first two episodes of the anime, Gunbuster Vol.1 is a digital comic, but approached differently than normal. To add more of a game experience to it, you have a stress meter on the right hand side of the screen and as you make incorrect choices, the meter fills up. When it reaches the top, it's game over and you have to replay from the beginning of that section. The game also features character statistics and a bonus drama scene.

Comment
Riverhill Soft has made some strange design choices for this game. The stress meter is an original idea for a digital comic and no doubt works well if you can understand Japanese, but it is more of a hindrance to anyone else as most of your choices are trial and error. However, it does not mean the game is rendered impossible - it's still pretty easy to get through it with a good memory or a notepad beside you. The visuals are also an odd choice. Instead of clean, colourful redrawn images of most other digital comics, these are more or less digitized and cleaned up, meaning that there is a certain loss of colour depth, although some of the animation is pretty good. The music is nice, the fantastic title song from the anime is there, along with some reasonable chip generated renditions of the soundtrack. Personally, I'm a massive fan of the original anime, so I enjoyed this game tremendously; it has some great dramatic moments and moves fairly quickly compared to some other games of this type. Fans of other digital comics might feel a little short-changed by this though, and may be more comfortable with something else.
