HUDSON SOFT/FALCOM
25 OCTOBER 1991
Another brilliant Falcom RPG. The plot is nothing special - you are a young prince tracking down your oppressive evil guardian etc etc, but it’s handled in a gripping enough way, with the game divided into individual chapters. The story eventually develops into something far more encompassing than petty revenge and has a typical semi-philosophical undertone that is common with Japanese RPGs. The enemy encounters are random and turn based, but they are fast and can be avoided easily later in the game (when you get to see them moving around the landscape), so they don’t get as frustrating as in some RPGs. One plus point is the way that some of the townsfolk talk - many of them have little quirks and this is often very funny, making it worthwhile going around and talking to everyone. Anyway, it’s a lengthy quest and gets you really involved. Without doubt the best turn-based RPG in English on the Engine, and one that does get better with repeated play.
GRAPHICS: Great intro as you would expect, but in game graphics are mostly functional and don’t vary a great deal.
SOUND: Superb soundtrack, with the occasional chip tune supported by the best sampled drums on the Engine. The English language acting is dire and a disgrace after the joy that was Ys I & II.
