Overview
It's the year 2020 and, yet again, the earth has to defend itself against evil forces. So get into your spacecraft and plug some bad guys! One of the few games available for the SuperGrafx, this gives the machine the opportunity to show what it can do with a horizontally scrolling shooter. Gameplay is fairly familiar stuff - the occasional enemy drops an item for you to collect. These can be either speed ups, weapon power increases, gun pods that follow you and can be set to attack enemy craft, or weapon types. The weapons include a forward firing laser, a green ball spread shot and diagonal laser that powers up into a handy 'loop shot' that tracks the scenery above and below.

So. A horizontal shooter on the superior hardware of the SuperGrafx...and one by none other than Hudson Soft. Surely this has to be a winner? Unfortunately not. In terms of game design the levels are bland and the graphical style wavers from rough to good to poor in places - it's very uneven - and there is so little variety: once you've seen the first screen in a level, you can be sure that's all it's got to offer. If this was on the standard PC Engine and programmed by someone other than Hudson Soft I would look upon it more kindly, but I always feel pangs of disappointment at what Aldynes could have been. It fails to make full use of the SG hardware, and gameplay falls way short of many other shoot 'em ups on the machine. One small area of joy can be found in some of the bosses however, particularly the superb transforming level 1 boss which shows promise that is otherwise not to be found in the game. If you are desperate for SuperGrafx games then try it, but just be warned that there are plenty of shooters that match or surpass it in every respect.

Cheats/Tips
When you complete the game, allow the credits to finish, then start a new game for a harder difficulty level. |
